Samsung sells a million Galaxy Tab tablet computers

It's all over the web, Samsung has sold more than 1 million Galaxy Tablet computers worldwide since it was launched two months ago, in October 2010. Of the 1 million Galaxy Tablets sold, and incredible 400,000 units were sold in the past two weeks. This follows even the more successful Apple iPad Launch in April 2010. Apple sold 1 million iPads in less than a month from its release, and is expected to sell 8 million iPad's this year.

To put things into perspective, from October 2007 to April 2010, 85 million Intel powered netbooks were sold, thats an average of almost 3 million units a month, not counting those with AMD or other processors. That is how big this market for these secondary computers are. While tablets and netbooks have different degrees of functionality, they appeal to the same segment of the market who acquire netbooks, or now tablets, as a second computer as back-up to a laptop or a desktop. Between lower prices for ultraportable laptops and the new phenomenon of the tablet computer, netbooks will not have to share the limelight with their bigger brothers and their new cousin. Make no mistake about it, the tablet computer is here to stay.

Other sectors think otherwise. According to Gartner (as reported in PCMag.com). Netbooks and other low-end consumer notebooks will only suffer a marginal loss in sales from tablets. Instead, it will be the sale of high-end smartphones, e-readers and gaming devices that will suffer the most. High end smartphone have already eaten into the sales of hand held gaming devices. Gartner believes that consumer who may in the past have opted for a high end smartphone might opt to buy a lower price smartphone and compliment it with a 7-inch tablet model.
"The usage model is closer to what consumers do with a smartphone while on the go than what they do on a PC when they are at their desk," Milanesi wrote in a company blog post. "It is about running applications, playing games, watching video content, reading books and magazines, surfing the web, updating your status on your social network of choice and checking email."
